Blog Post 3: Selection and Review

Whilst waking through the streets of my home town, I captured the following shots which got me thinking quite a bit. During this task I have kept in mind to keep my eyes open wider than the average day, in order to observe closer the activity of street life that I have grown accustomed to.

‘Waiting…’

Whilst strolling through one of the busy streets of Sliema, I sighted a person observing the busy street, just as I was, positioned right in front of an empty shop.

His posture portrays a relaxed yet attentive look, possibly waiting for someone, or even just wandering through the streets observing the fellow pedestrians, cars, characters; and they’re hectic activity. Perhaps he is standing there, passing time, waiting for something interesting to happen?

‘Urban Jungle’ (set of 2)

In a building complex, a concrete, urban jungle. Whilst the structures create a satisfying composition, the density, closeness, and coldness of these four structures show how our society is changing, how the current times are evolving into a future of more constricted living, denser populated areas and more concrete.

‘Morning Coffee’

A discussion, tense or friendly? It may be a casual business discussion, a friendly talk about yesterday’s game, or discussing life?

The character in white seems to be partly enclosed by the glass, as he seems to be sitting in an argumentative stance. Whilst the other person sits… and listens, and has no walls holding him in. Or perhaps they are just questioning why their morning coffee & snack has not yet arrived?

‘Busy day ahead?’

Shopping or maybe work?

The busy streets are filled with different characters, some shopping around, others passing time and some are on work, or going from/to their workplace. The person framed above seems to be looking away from the shop window, or even looking to another shop on the opposite side. Or is he distracted by some other passers-by?

‘Conversation Starter’

A tourist starts an interesting conversation with three bronze artists.

It is interesting how he is not only different by flesh and metal, but also the color of his shirt stands out like a white shirt in a black and white shot.

Is he actually posing for a photo besides the one captured? Or is he actually conversing with the three other characters?

‘Under Construction’

Two women walk besides each other separated by construction structures. Are they friends, or foe? Have they got anything else in common besides shopping, and walking in the same direction? Did they choose to walk separated from each other by the structures in frame?

 Different generations and digital technology’

It saddens me how we tend to do everything online, and the physical interactions have decreased dramatically over the past two decades. Although not many admit that our mobile phones took over our lives, it is sadly the truth. From banking to chatting, taking notes during classes, photos to capture any moment, to sending instant updates to your social media followers across the globe.

In this shot, the younger woman is showing the older man, possibly her father, something which might interest him, whilst having a not-so-generous social-distanced conversation.
