Blog Post 10: Evaluation

As the semester comes to an end, it is now time to evaluate my work and what I have learnt in this subject.

From the beginning of the semester, throughout the class of Visual Thinking, we have been guided through a constant progress from idea generation up until the final presentation. The whole process taught me many things, starting from street photography; which was something I personally never ventured out to do, to in depth research, and finally implementation of the concept I had been planning for a couple of months. A short but sweet journey.

Further to reviewing the project and discussing my work in class, am happy with the project and the course I took, although I would probably change most of the decisions I took… From the start of the project, I got stuck by choosing the theme Urban Jungle, which I myself knew it was a challenging theme. Nonetheless, with the help of my peers and lecturer, I managed to break down the theme, and build a concept, and finally managed to execute.

I believe that the final production successfully portrays the message that I intended to express, this is backed by the peer reviews and also from the feedback received in class. The message delivered was that nature is tranquil and calm whilst the urban cities are hectic, chaotic and always in a rush.

The scenes I chose for the final cut, balanced out between Urban and Jungle, were a good combination. Having a sunrise time lapse, followed by match cuts, contrasting shots from nature with hyper lapse of traffic and closing with a sunset time lapse portrayed exactly what I intended to. The sharp cuts from one to the other leave the audience jumping from one scene to the other, clearly noticing and realizing the concept.

Nonetheless, something that could have been done much better is the audio. For this, I used some background audio I recorded but added  sourced bits from different scenes which did not really fit in and felt repetitive or very out of place. This could have been achieved by using a constant ambient sound and adding the actual recording of traffic in the respective scenes. This was also suggested by my peers. Whilst I was aware of this, I had limited time and was unable to re-record the audio to match the scenes. This should be something that I work on for future projects, as it shows how important the audio is in such video sequences.

Overall, I am satisfied with the final production, being that it was the first of its kind that I have created, but without a doubt, It can do with a good remake which I will definitely plan in the future. Until then, I will most definitely adjust and fix the sound and keep it as a personal project.
