Blog Post 6: Idea 1 – Nostalgia & Grief

The first Idea that I am researching is that of Nostalgia and grief.

Josh Neufeld, a portrait photographer from Canada, worked on a project called portraits of Grief, he holds a conversation with 22 subjects, individually about their departed relatives, and waits for emotions on the subjects face, keeping an eye in their eyes and lips for the right moment.

In a paper for her B.A. Degree of arts at Scrips College, Eva Simone Weiner uses the opening lines “Photography has been linked with death ever since its inception. Many media scholars
have studied the relationship between death and photography, and many have disagreed on the
effect that photographs have on the mourning process.” This is interesting, and relates to the ideas of nostalgia and grief directly.

Interestingly, Weiner gathered a number of photographs from her late grand mother, and uses photoshop to adds her grand mother or herself into them, creating moments that never existed.
